Diabetic Educator – Alicia Bernardo

 

Alicia is a registered nurse with over 30yrs experience, her early career was hospital based before starting a family and moving into aged care where she worked for nearly 15yrs.

She joined the team at GMC over 10yrs ago where her interest in Diabetes management grew. Going back to Uversity after 30 years, Alicia undertook formal studies completing a Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education in 2022. She gained Credentialing status in Jan 2024.

She now has dual hats at GMC working as both practice nurse and Diabetes educator.

Dealing mostly with Type 2, pre diabetes and people at risk of diabetes Alicia is passionate about helping people develop the skills and knowledge they need to manage their diabetes. Alicia is pleased to be able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to help people better understand and therefore manage their diabetes or work towards diabetes remission, under GP Care Plans, DVA referrals and private consultations. Alicia is an early career Diabetes educator who believes in balance and moderation and that each individual and their situation is unique, and should be treated as such. Alicia practices in a holistic and person-centred manner aiming to support patient’s individual health goals. She prides herself in practising in a manner that promotes long term, realistic and sustainable results based on evidence. She ensures that her patients receive accurate and relevant information, staying up-to-date with the latest research and guidelines.
